State goods and services tax (SGST) officials in Ludhiana have assured traders and industrialists that they will not face a penalty of Rs 50,000 for not displaying their GST identification numbers (GSTIN) outside their business premises. Reports of such penalties caused panic among businesses, prompting the Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal (PPBM) to take up the issue with senior SGST officials. The officials confirmed that no decision had been made to impose the penalty. The PPBM has urged businessmen to contact them if threatened with the penalty and has forwarded the names of officials involved to higher authorities. This assurance has brought relief to the business community in Ludhiana.
