Forum national president Bandaru Jwala Narasimham wrote a letter to Union finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman, on Monday, explaining the difficulties of the people in the handloom sector spread all over the country.

He said that the GST had crippled the handloom sector in the country, with the Covid-19 pandemic and economic crisis. The handloom workers in the country have no work since March 2020 as the Covid 19 hit the country and the government imposing lockdown, he said.
Added to the current Covid-19 crisis, the sector is also inflicted by the taxes levied on the raw material. He said that the GST on hank yarn is 5 per cent, while it is 18 per cent on chemicals and colours and 4 per cent on cloth.
