04.11.2026: GSTN revises E-Way Bill and Consolidated E-Way Bill numbering formats from 1 January 2027
The GSTN has issued Advisory dated 04.11.2026, to announce a revision in the numbering formats of E-Way Bills and Consolidated E-Way Bills with effect from 1 January 2027, considering the substantial increase in the volume of E-Way Bills generated and the anticipated exhaustion of the existing numbering capacity.
Under the proposed changes, the existing 12-digit E-Way Bill Number will be expanded to 14 digits, while the Consolidated E-Way Bill Number will be revised from the existing 10 digits to 11 digits.
The revised formats are summarised below:
| Document type | Existing format | Revised format |
|---|---|---|
| E-Way Bill Number | 12 digits | 14 digits |
| Consolidated E-Way Bill Number | 10 digits | 11 digits |
GSTN has advised all stakeholders, including taxpayers, GST Suvidha Providers (GSPs), ERP/software providers and API integrators, to undertake the necessary modifications in their applications, APIs, database schemas and validation rules to accommodate the revised numbering formats.
The changes will be made available in the Sandbox environment shortly to facilitate testing, and further technical details will be published on the E-Way Bill Portal. Stakeholders have been advised to ensure system readiness well before the implementation date to avoid disruption in E-Way Bill generation and related operations.
