Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (Department of Consumer Affairs, Weights and Measures Unit) has issued an advisory dated 18.09.2025, granting relaxation in compliance requirements under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 in the wake of recent GST revision.
Key Points from the Circular
1. Voluntary Affixing of Revised Price Stickers Manufacturers, packers, and importers may voluntarily affix revised price stickers on unsold packages manufactured before 22nd September, 2025, provided the original price declaration is not obscured. The Rules do not mandate revised price stickers for such unsold packages.
2. Waiver of Advertisement Requirement – The Central Government, exercising powers under Rule 33, has waived the requirement under Rule 18(3) for manufacturers/importers to publish advertisements in two newspapers regarding revised prices.
3. Alternative Communication –Instead of advertisements, manufacturers/packers/importers are required to send circulars to wholesale dealers/retailers informing them of the revised prices, with copies maintained for record.
4. Old packaging allowed – Existing packaging/wrappers with old MRP can be used till 31st March 2026 (or till stock of wrappers is over) with corrected MRP by stamp/sticker/online printing.
5. Revised MRP declaration optional – If MRP is pre-printed, declaring revised unit sale price is voluntary.
