10.02.2025: GSTN issued Advisory for Biometric-Based Aadhaar Authentication and Document Verification for GST Registration Applicants of Maharashtra and Lakshadweep

GSTN Advisory

The GSTN has issued an Advisory dated 08.02.2025, regarding Biometric-Based Aadhaar Authentication and Document Verification for GST Registration Applicants of Maharashtra and Lakshadweep.

The Advisory reads as under:

Guidelines for the Registration Process

Amendment to Rule 8 of CGST Rules, 2017:

  • Applicants can now be identified on the GST portal using Biometric-based Aadhaar Authentication, alongside a photograph and verification of original documents uploaded with the application.
  • Identification will be determined based on data analysis and risk parameters.

New Functionality Rollout 

The Biometric-based Aadhaar Authentication and associated document verification process have been launched in Maharashtra and Lakshadweep as of 8th February 2025.

Document verification and appointment booking process

Upon submitting Form GST REG-01, applicants will receive an email containing one of the following:

a. OTP-based Aadhaar Authentication Link: If received, applicants can proceed with the existing process.
b. Link for Booking an Appointment: This will include details of the GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) and jurisdiction where the applicant must complete the biometric authentication and document verification.

Steps for Biometric-based Aadhaar Authentication:

If an applicant receives the appointment link:

  • Use the provided link to book an appointment at a designated GSK.
  • A confirmation email will be sent upon successful booking.

Appointment Confirmation & GSK Visit:

  • Applicants must visit the designated GSK as per the appointment schedule.
  • At the GSK, biometric authentication and document verification will be conducted for all individuals listed in the GST application.

Documents Required for the GSK Visit:

  • Copy of the appointment confirmation email (hard or soft).
  • Jurisdiction details as mentioned in the intimation email.
  • Original Aadhaar Card and PAN Card.
  • Original copies of documents uploaded with the application.

Completion of Biometric Authentication:

  • The applicant must complete the biometric verification within the maximum permissible period specified in the intimation email.
  • Upon successful biometric authentication and document verification, the Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated.
